Those of you who follow these postings on a regular basis know that I am fascinated by the great Italian lottery game, SuperEnalotto, which I played a few years ago, while visiting Rome. It’s a lottery to die for. Big odds. Huge jackpots.

Yet, many people OUTSIDE of Italy, don’t know much about this game which almost always runs up big jackpots.

And SuperEnalotto, to players in Italy and surrounding countries, is the equivalent of Mega Millions and Powerball in the U.S. and Euro Millions in 9 European countries.So today, we’ll take care of all that and hopefully clear up any confusion.

First, it’s a 6 of 90 games.

SuperEnalotto draws take the first on Tuesday, second on Thursday, and third on Saturday.

In case there is an Italian holiday on any of these days, the draw is shifted to the next day. No draw takes place on Sundays.

Superenalotto draw takes place at 7:30 CET, Central European Time.

Here’s the cool part: There are a total of 5 divisions in a game of Superenalotto, and each division has different odds of winning:

The winning odds for the jackpot are 1 in 622,614,630.

For 2nd prize, the winning odds are 1 in 103,769,105.

For 3rd prize, the winning odds are 1 in 1,235,346

1 in 11,907 is the winning odds for the 4th prize.

1 in 327 is the winning odd for the 5th prize.

The jackpot amount is decided on the basis of the number of tickets sold for a particular game. 34.648% of the total money obtained from the sale of lottery tickets is given as the jackpot. Each of the five divisions shares the jackpot amount in different percentages:

The winner with all 6 matching numbers is given 20% of the total jackpot.

The winners with 5 matching numbers and 1 jolly number are given 20% of the jackpot.

The winners with 5 matching numbers are given 15% of the jackpot.

The winners with 4 matching numbers are given 15% of the jackpot.

The winners with 3 matching numbers are given 30% of the jackpot.

In case there is no winner with all 6 matching numbers, the jackpot amount for that division gets rolled over to the game that follows.

Some big winners: It was in 2009 that a resident of Bagnone, a small town in Italy, made the record by winning about €147 million. It was, at the time, the biggest jackpot ever won in the history of European online lottery. However, the record has was broken in October, 2010, when a went on to win the jackpot of €177 million.

From news sources, I have learned that gamblers will be able to buy lottery tickets in New Hampshire next week to play online — a move seen by some as an expansion of the kind of gambling that state lawmakers oppose.

But not me.

PlayNowNH interactive games go on sale July 1.

New Jersey tried something like this a few years ago, incidentally.

Here is how it works: players choose the game — baseball, super slots, speed bingo or New Hampshire poker — and the amount they want to play.

For example, players can buy chances for the $1 baseball game on one ticket or a separate ticket with chances for the $5 poker game.
