Winning the lottery is just the beginning

All in the Family? Brother and Sister Win Millions Two Years Apart…Playing the Lottery

This story came across my desk; it’s one of those weird, odds-defying stories. The kind that made it into my book (still available through amazon.com…just click on the cover to the right).

This story out of New York is another head scratcher. Two very rich siblings win the lottery.

Go figure.

Seems like  two years after her wealthy businessman brother won $1 million a year for life in the lottery, Manhattan party planner Cindy Altunis has scored a $1 million jackpot — with a ticket bought at the same gas station where her brother got his.

First, I want to know where the hell that gas station is. [I jest; see below]

At a New York Lottery press conference Altunis said, ”My mother is a good-luck charm here. She’s the common denominator.”

Altunis bought her $500,000,000 Extravaganza scratch-off ticket with her mother, Gonul, on March 1 at the Norwich Service Station on Northern Boulevard in East Norwich.

She will get a check from the Lottery for $33,015 per year for the next 20 years.

“If I wasn’t visiting my parents that day in March, I wouldn’t have won,” she said at the press conference. “God has blessed me and my family.”

And how.

Her brother, Kenan won the $1 Million for Life scratch game in 2008.

Kenan Altunis, a banker who lives in London, gave his mother $100 to buy tickets during a visit to the United States in 2008.

Because he was a London resident, Altunis did not have to pay federal tax on the millions and gets $930,000 per year.

But according to news reports, he is so wealthy that his win has hardly made a difference in his lifestyle.

This would seem to be the very definition of a lucky store.

Cindy Altunis said her whole family, which hails from Turkey, is now playing the lottery at the store.

You betcha.

“Uncles, aunts and cousins — we all play the lottery,” she said.
