Share and Share Alike, Kansas and Iowa Players Split Scratch Game Prizes
An Iowa Lottery player has won a $500,000 cash prize in an instant scratch game offered jointly by the Kansas and Iowa lotteries.
Kim Hertel of Washington, Ia., was drawn as the winner of $500,000 in the “Midwest Millions” drawing conducted Friday, January 15 at West Ridge Mall in Topeka.
While a Kansas Lottery player missed out on winning the top prize, four of the five $10,000 prizes were won by Kansas Lottery players from Leavenworth, Clay Center, Topeka and Elk City. Here is the list of winners in the Midwest Millions second-chance drawing:
$500,000 Kim Hertel – Washington, Ia.
$10,000 Ronnie Burnett – Leavenworth, Kan.
$10,000 James Hess – Clay Center, Kan.
$10,000 Deberia Blair – Topeka, Kan.
$10,000 Diane Robinson – Indianola, Ia.
$10,000 Mark Loftin – Elk City, Kan.
The winners’ names were drawn by Terry Rich, the CEO of the Iowa Lottery.
This was the first of two Midwest Millions drawings this year. Kansas Lottery Executive Director Ed Van Petten will draw the names at a second Midwest Millions drawing to be held in Iowa in April.
So, if you are in Kansas or Iowa….
The Kansas and Iowa lotteries are the first in the United States to offer a joint instant-scratch game.
This is the third Midwest Millions game the two lotteries have developed together. Players entered the drawing by submitting non-winning $10 Midwest Millions tickets. There were approximately 94,000 combined entries from both states.
In the first year of the Midwest Millions game, two Iowa Lottery players won both of the $500,000 prizes. The second year, both $500,000 winners were won by Kansas Lottery players: Sandra Vines of Wichita, and Adam Sorell of Shawnee.
“While it was an Iowa Lottery player who won the $500,000 prize this time, we’re still very happy that four of the five $10,000 winners were Kansas Lottery players,” said Kansas Lottery Executive Director Ed Van Petten. “Of course, we hope to bring home the top prize next time at the Iowa drawing.”
“It’s exciting to work together,” Iowa Lottery CEO Terry Rich said. “Midwest Millions gives both of our lotteries a chance to offer larger prizes for our players and increase lottery sales in both our states.”
Midwest Millions tickets are still being sold in Kansas and Iowa, and a second drawing will be held in Iowa on April 16, 2010. The prizes in the second drawing will be identical to the first drawing– one $500,000 cash prize and five $10,000 cash prizes.
The first Midwest Millions game was launched in September 2007. The current game was launched in September 2009, and offers 1.2 million tickets, with 600,000 going to each state.
