Iowa Lottery’s “Lucky Diamonds” is a Girl’s Best Friend

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, right?

At least in Iowa, that’s true.

Just ask the Iowa City woman who just last week bought a “Lucky Diamond” scratch ticket ‘out of the blue and ended up winning a $250,000 prize.

Ain’t life grand?

Bettie Brendlinger, 57, won the top prize playing the lottery’s “Lucky Diamonds” instant-scratch game.

“We kind of went into shock. We weren’t sure if we were seeing it right,” said Brendlinger.

Brendlinger and her husband immediately drove home and locked the ticket in a safe. She had it verified at a local convenience store Monday before claiming it at the Iowa Lottery’s regional office in Cedar Rapids.

The Brendlingers’ daughter was the first to hear of the big news.

“She was very shocked. She said, ‘Are you for real mom?’” Brendlinger said. “We had to go back and forth between Mom and Dad to say, ‘Yeah, this really happened.’”

Brendlinger said this particular play was only the third time she had played the Lucky Diamonds game.

The couple plans to pay some bills with their money, and then take a trip to Jamaica.

Lucky Diamonds is a $10 scratch game.
