$1 Million Prize is a “Godsend” for Church Worker
Susan Samick of Fairport, Monroe County, New York, likes to be busy.
Since moving to Monroe County from Pennsylvania 10 years ago to be closer to family, the 67-year-old retired hairdresser divides her time between caring for her grandchildren, volunteering at her beloved Assumption of Our Lady Church in Fairport, and trying to win the Lottery.
“Why not?” Samick told Lottery officials in New York. “Someone has to win; why not me?”
Her wishes came true on March 9, 2009 when she inserted $5 into a New York Lottery instant ticket vending machine at her local Wegmans store in Penfield and selected an “In The Money” scratch off game from among all those on display.
The ticket turned out to be a $1,000,000 winner.
“I’m very glad I didn’t scratch it in the store,” said Samick. “I was screaming pretty loud for a while before I calmed down.”
Samick said her love of family and desire to help other people will probably play a big role in how she spends her newfound fortune. “It’s a Godsend. It’s just wonderful that I have been given this opportunity to help family and friends.”
On a more practical level, the mother of three said she would like to use a portion of her prize to downsize to a new patio home and travel with her husband of 47 years, Francis, who recently retired from his job as a financial manager for the Assumption of Our Lady Church.
The million dollar prize was the second big jackpot won at a Wegman’s store in that town. A woman recently won a “Set for Life” scratch off worth at least $5 million. So…next time you’re in the area you might want to stop by Wegmans.
Note from the N.Y. Lottery: As is the case with most New York Lottery instant game prizes, the top prize on the “In The Money ticket” is paid as a 20-year annuity.
Samick will receive her prize in annual payments of $50,000 a year before required tax withholdings. Her annual net check will total $34,075.
GAMES WE PLAY:
There was no jackpot winner in the April 22 Powerball game, so the jackpot rolls to $53 million on April 25.
The winning numbers for April 22 are 15,22,30,37, 48 and the Power ball was 12. At least I got that number (whew…)
2 tickets hit 5 of 5 but missed the Power ball. Both tickets, bought in New Hampshire and Pennsylvania, are worth $200,000.
The April 24 Mega Millions game carries a huge $155 million jackpot.
The April 24 Euro Millions game offers up a large 75 million euro jackpot, and that translates roughly to $97.9 million, U.S.
Good luck everyone.
