Kansas Woman Has Beginner’s Luck, Wins $20,000

Those of us who have been playing the lottery for years…doesn’t it just freak you out when you hear that someone playing for the first time (or so they say) wins a big jackpot.

I mean, how many thousands of times have YOU played?

I’m not bitter mind you. I think it’s kind of cool and shows that anyone can win anytime. And it’s my turn next.

Forty-year-old Luz Diaz, of Kansas, had never purchased a lottery ticket, until March, when a friend talked her into buying a $2 Bonus Crossword ticket.

“She told me would show me how to play the ticket, so I bought one just to try it,” said Diaz.

Unbelievably, one try was all it took for Diaz to end up with a $20,000 top prize!

Diaz was still astonished at her incredible beginner’s luck when she came to Lottery headquarters to claim her prize.

“I thought my friend was joking when she said I had won $20,000,” Diaz said. “It wasn’t until we called the Lottery office to have them check the ticket that I believed it. And even then, I didn’t really believe it until we got here.”

Diaz and her husband have four children, including a son who attends Oklahoma State University.

“This couldn’t have come at a better time. I’m going to use this prize money to help my son pay for his college, and also to pay some of our other bills,” Diaz said.

The winning Bonus Crossword ticket was purchased at Quick Shop 5, located at 4201 Shawnee Drive in Kansas City, Kansas.
