“Virginia Granny” Wins $100,000 Scratch Game

November 13th, 2008 · No Comments · Lottery, Picking Numbers, Stories

I love to hear stories about senior citizens winning the lottery. Here is a short story about someone I just ran across in Virginia.

You might call Phyllis Charlton of Roanoke a “service grandmother.” That’s because four of her grandchildren serve in the U.S. armed forces.

Now she can be known by a different title: lottery winner. She won $100,000 in the Virginia Lottery’s Roll ’Em Scratcher game.

It happened when she stopped by a local supermarket in Roanoke, Va. to purchase tickets. When she scratched the winning ticket, her first reaction was to think, “That’s not right!”

Later, she breathlessly told Lottery officials, “I didn’t quite believe what I was seeing, so I put it away.”

Charlton said she plans to use her winnings to pay bills and have some work done on her house.

If you know of a senior citizen who’s won a big prize lately in your home town or state or country…let me know and I’ll try to tell their story.

By the Numbers:

There was no Powerball winner last night so the jackpot rolls to $42 million on Saturday. The winning numbers were 1,18,25,29,45 and the Power Ball was 2. The multiplier was also 2. Six winning tickets around the country hit the first five numbers and each won $200,000. Those tickets were bought in Arizona, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina and Wisconsin.

So check your tickets, players.

Friday night’s Mega Millions jackpot is up to $62 million.
