China’s Biggest Lottery Winner Steps Forward
Americans like to think they invented state run lotteries, but the truth is that the Hun Dynasty in China first created a Keno-like lottery game in 100 B.C., primarily to finance construction of the Great Wall.
More than 2,000 years later the government now runs a lottery much like our own. And a few weeks ago, they had their biggest winner ever.
But when Lao Yang won 82.34 million yuan (U.S. $11.76 million) he collected his money under police guard. He also came disguised in a mask, wig, hat and sunglasses, reported the Chongqing Evening News.
The lottery center staged a small ceremony for Lao Yang after verifying the authenticity of his ticket and filling out the paperwork. The whole process was supervised by the municipal notaries and policemen.
After taxes, Lao Yang received 65.936 million yuan, or US $9.42 million, in cash. For safety purposes, Lao Yang also asked for a police escort to deposit the money at his bank.
Lao Yang was reportedly very nervous answering reporters’ questions. He said that his wife still has no idea that he won the lottery, and even he can’t believe his luck. He says he intends to invest the money in his business.
