Winning the lottery is just the beginning

UK National Lottery

The UK National Lottery is the largest operating lottery in the country today.  It is also one of the most popular, if not the most popular lotteries in existence – at least in this part of the world.  It was launched in 1994 and has since then become one of the most favorite pastimes of British residents all throughout the country.  The Office of the National Lottery (OFLOT) was initially tasked with the operation of the UK National Lottery.  In April of 1999, however, the National Lottery Commission was handed the reigns and has since then overseen the lottery.

Today, the Camelot Group directly operates the National Lottery.  This group is composed of five shareholders and is in effect a private company.  It holds a second 7-year license to operate the lottery, which was granted in 2001.

According to statistics garnered over the years, more than 65% of the population of the United Kingdom regularly plays the lottery.  This is an impressive figure, especially if you consider the fact that about 28% of the lottery proceeds are given to charitable causes.

The National Lottery has several “brands.”  Some of the more popular ones are Lotto Extra, Lotto Hot Picks, Thunderball, EuroMillions, and Scratchcards. In order to play the National Lottery, you have to be a resident of the UK and you have to be at least 18 years old.  Otherwise, your tickets will be void.  If you qualify, you only have to fill a play slip.  It has boards (basically boxes) with numbers.  All you need to do is pick out the numbers that you wish to play and wait for a win.
